Book Review: Chasing the Scream – Johann Hari

We start right at the beginning of the war on drugs, way back in 1914. Already that is something most people don’t realize. This has been the longest war by a mile in modern history. One hundred years.

This brings us to Harry Anslinger. The real creator of the war on drugs. Billy Holiday. One of the first victims. And finally Arnold Rothstien. The first gangster and drug king pin, created by drug prohibition. As Hari say’s, these three faces are “the Mount Rushmore of the war on drugs.” We learn that when these three were born, drugs were freely available throughout the world. But by the end of their lives that would be a completely different story.

Through their stories and a number of others, were subject to facts that are so devastating to the argument of drug prohibition its difficult not to go screaming to your local politician. For example:
